Welcome to CASCADE!

Everyone wants to know what their food contains. So does CASCADE. Therefore, we are dedicated to identify and study chemicals in our food.

The CASCADE Network of Excellence therefore focus on human health, in particular hormone disrupting effects (so called endocrine disruption). Read more...

CASCADE celebrates success

Five years has passed since CASCADE started. During this time we have developed into a highly successful network of experts in food safety. Key to our success is our firm belief in collaboration, something that lays at heart of all CASCADE’s activities.

A few weeks ago we submitted our final report to the European Commission (EC). The report covers our achievements throughout the past five years, during which the EC has funded our work. A few highlights from the report are our shared scientific vision and research with a societal focus. Read more...

RESEARCHER OF THE MONTH:

Professor Vincent Laudet, France

"Thanks to CASCADE I now know so much more about risk assessment of chemical components and how important this is.

Before I joined CASCADE, I nearly knew what risk assessment work was, and today, after five years of working with all this experts from all over Europe, I do not only know very much more about risk assessment of chemical components, but also how broad and important this area is. Now I have many friends from different research areas thanks to CASCADE collaboration activities - researchers I never would have met otherwise.

Today, it is just for me to pick up the phone and contact a friend. And of course, the question about how chemical components affect our health is also of concern for me as a private person - researchers are consumers too!"

Prof Vincent Laudet, working with nuclear receptors for 20 years, CASCADE partner since 2004.

CASCADE  - Ensuring baby food safety in Europe

The major results emanating from the WP19 Baby food project is now published in a non-scientific paper.

The title is “CASCADE – ensuring baby food safety in Europe”,and the article is published in the last number (Issue 2) of Science and Technology, Public Service review.

Final report on the future of Networks of Excellence

CASCADE has raised the issue of the uncertain future of the European NoEs through the Support research Network of Excellences (NoEs) campaign. Among other things, this resulted in a review of the NoEs, with the goal to evaluate the networks as instruments to strengthen Europe's scientific impact. CASCADE was one of the NoEs invited to provide input to this evaluation which is now finished. Read more…

New review about EDCs' involvement in metabolic disorders

This review highlights the accumulating data on the potential involvement of EDCs in metabolic disorders, with focus on the molecular mechanism of EDCs action:

- There are several evidences that endocrine disruptive chemicals might actually cause metabolic problems, says Elin Swedenborg, one of the authors.

Elucidatory about CASCADE research

CASCADE magazine

CASCADE magazine

The CASCADE magazine highlights the unique features of the network such as the state-of-the-art research on endocrine disrupting contaminants in food. Moreover, the magazine informs about the CASCADE training courses, about collaborations with European and non-European research projects, and about future projects and visions.

During 2008, CASCADE has distributed more than 2000 paper pieces of the magazine among partner universities, journalists, EC representatives, authorities and others. In addition, the magazine has been distributed on meetings, conferences and symposia during the year.

Challenges in future European Endocrine Disruption research

Finally, the Opinion paper from CASCADE Open Forum 2nd of October is finished.

The document is entitled “Challenges in future European endocrine disruption research – outlining identified research needs and opportunities” and is signed by representatives from the eight organizing projects.

These projects together encompass more than 170 research groups and more than 800 researchers from 20 different European countries. We present the actions required to fill the knowledge gaps in ED research.
