MSTnet

MSTnet – An internet based discussion forum for scientists using mathematical and statistical tools in their research

The Mathematical and Statistical Tools net (MSTnet) has been initiated as a part of one of the the CASCADE objectives - to integrate existing academic efforts and structures in the risk assessment area in Europe. MSTnet gathers experts and interested persons in exposure assessment and dose response modelling of toxicological effect data with the aim to increase the cooperation in these areas in Europe and to contribute to harmonisation and extended use of mathematical tools in health risk assessment.

MSTnet is coordinated by a small group of scientists and research students at the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, who apply mathematical methods to exposure and toxicological effect data in their daily work. MSTnet has 93 members from universities (22%), research institutes (50%), authorities and governmental/ intergovernmental institutions (18%) and industry (10%) in 16 European countries.

The MSTnet activities include a moderated web-based discussion forum and a web-based journal club:

·         The web-based discussion forum is located on the CASCADE internal website, where day-to-day communication is possible and issues of importance for exposure assessment and mathematical modelling of toxicological effect data can be discussed. There are also possibilities to post relevant documents and information on the MSTnet website.

·         The MSTnet web-based journal club discuss selected published articles related to mathematical modelling of exposure and toxicological effect data. A moderator will lead the discussion and authors of the selected publications are invited to contribute. The journal club uses the Marratech e-meeting software (can be downloaded without charge from www.marratech.com). So far, two web-based journal clubs have taken place during 2007 with invited senior experts/authors.

·         Three to four journal clubs are planned for the year 2008.

If you are interested in joining the MSTnet and/or the journal club or if you want more information, please contact Fereshteh.Kalantari@ki.se or Emma.Westerholm@ki.se.
